The wicked Wicklow Way

Thanks to Captain Hans Mallaney, Mr. C and I safely arrived. It was raining quite heavily and the six °C at Dublin Airport were a rough change to the 22 at which we left Düsseldorf.

After a rainy ride on the 474, we found our plan for a nice arrival beer swimming away at 11 pm at the sight of a closed and dark Heuston Station. We decided to take a taxi to the hotel instead of wasting more time searching for a pub. The taxi driver’s sudden question “do you know where we are?” came a bit as a surprise, but the situation fortunately could be cleared up by the lady from within the device, which safely guided us to Ardagh House around midnight.

After checking in Mr. C, we decided to finally try and get our well-deserved beer. Our way led us to The 108, where Mr. C complained a lot that to him everything tastes like vinegar in Ireland. My IPA, his red ale and the crisps (which admittedly were salt and vinegar).

At around 2:30 am, I finally headed to Abrae Guest House, where Mrs. E was already fast asleep. We set the alarm to 6:30 am, which definitely felt wrong given the time. Especially considering the 24 km ahead of us the next day and a forecast that had not much more than more rain for us.

Hot stuff in Adobo Sauce

1000803901About a year ago I got a can of La Costeña Chipotle peppers in Adobo Sauce as a gift from a friend, who was in Mexico for a few weeks.
Ever since, I was wondering if I could make these myself. I have a love for hot stuff, am cooking quite a bit, and own a small smoking box, which I used quite a bit back in the days, when I still was fishing more.

So, when I saw some Jalapeños on sale in the local supermarket, I decided to give it a try. On chefkoch.de, I found a wonderful recipe, which I’d like to share with you:

Ingredients:
16 freshly smoked Chipotle peppers
200 ml vinegar
50 g brown sugar
1 medium sized onion
4 clefts of garlic
3 medium sized tomato
2 bay leafs
½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. ground black pepper
½ tsp. cumin
1 pinch of cinnamon

Cut the tomato, onion and garlic in coarse pieces. Heat the vinegar in a pot and dissolve the sugar in it. Add all remaining ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes. Now add the Chipotle peppers and simmer for another 30 minutes. If you use dried Chipotle peppers, add them to the Adobo Sauce from the start. Keep stirring the sauce every few minutes so the ingredients fall apart a bit. After cooking, you can put the sauce into glasses and keep them for some time. Enjoy!

Below are some pictures of a variant of this recipe, in which I used green tomato instead of fully ripened ones and ordinary smoked red chilli peppers instead of Jalapeños. The result was still hot and tasty!

Somewhat over a year ago, someone dropped a bucket of white wall paint on the sidewalk near where I live. This accident created a nicely elongated patch with some protrusions in the direction of pouring. Sometime later, presumably someone else used a black marker to make visible what was hidden in the white patch all the time: a crocodile! I really liked the spirit of this second mysterious person, but only got really amused by the whole thing when I found some days ago that the street workers who put glass fibre internet cables under the sidewalk had created a real piece of art. Enjoy!

I just stumbled over the recording of a very nice jam session I did with a former colleague from Norway during a visit he paid in 2011. The recording was done purely electronically using just an electronic drum kit, a MIDI controller and a laptop for recording and providing synthesis of sounds for the keyboards. Unfortunately, we only recorded one of these sessions… Anyway, here is the masterpiece:

A journey’s end…

My summer has been a real blast travel-wise. I’ve been on a lot of almost magical vacations and successfully completed a heap of business trips, which both took me to quite some places in Europe.

The journey went about like this: Munich, Ireland, Munich, Memmingen, Vienna, Gif sur Yvette, Leipzig, Dresden, Stockholm, Paris, Manchester, Alkmar, Seewis, Munich again, Dinkelsbühl, Stockholm again, Madonna di Campiglio, Frankfurt, Lausanne, Leukerbad, Böblingen, Barcelona, Brussels, Freiburg, Schruns, Tieringen.

It feels like inbetween I was home only to do the laundry and to sleep. It is really amazing, what one can do and see in one year. All in all, I was sleeping for 101 nights in a foreign bed. Considering that many of the trips were only one or two days, this is totally too much.

Nur so kann gewährleistet werden, dass das Produkt angemessen präsentiert wird und andererseits die Kunden effektiv angesprochen werden. Es gilt Kernaussagen zu finden, Prioritäten zu setzen und zu definieren, welche Information wo und an wen gerichtet werden soll. Ideenfindung für neue Produkte, kreative Angebotsformen oder ungewöhnliche Vertriebswege können ebenfalls Teil dieser Strategien sein. Erst dann beginnt die eigentliche gestalterische Arbeit.

Gestaltung

Die bildliche Darstellung schafft den ersten und wichtigsten Eindruck bei Präsentationen. Ein Logo steht nicht nur für ein Produkt oder eine Dienstleistung, nein, es vermittelt auch den ersten unvoreingenommenen Eindruck von dem, was man geboten bekommt. Daher sollte man bei der Wahl einer Grafik mit Wort, Form und Farbe genau den Punkt treffen, der dem Betrachter einen möglichst genauen Eindruck von dem vermittelt, was ihn erwartet. Wichtig sind die durch das Design entstehenden Gefühle, die beim Betrachter den ersten Eindruck stark prägen. Form und Farbe bilden die Grundpfeiler. Bildliche Darstellungen und produktbezogene Details sollen klar zeigen, worum es sich bei der Präsentation handelt. Ziel ist es, dem Betrachter ein Gefühl des Wohlbehagens zu vermitteln und Orientierung zu schaffen.

Webdesign

Mittlerweile blicken die Jungs vom Webschleppdienst auf weit über 100 Webseiten zurück, die von ihnen gestaltet wurden. Farewell, N900

Exactly 1023 (!) days after I first switched on my Nokia N900 (still back in Norway), it stopped working as a phone. It just won’t recognize the SIM card anymore, although other phones think that the card is just fine. This leaves me with an internet and gaming tablet similar to the predecessors of that family.

I was one of the enthusiasts, who spent 600 bucks on the N900 in the idealistic believe that an open phone platform could be a viable alternative to the lock-in world, Apple was creating at the time (and still is, with its iThings). It also seemed to be a good choice compared to the early Android devices available back then. However, from the beginning, I was doubtful that a single non-nerd will buy a phone that was advertised with the slogan raw computing power! I was very pleased with the hardware of the device, which seemed very robust and durable, compared to many other phones. However, with Nokia’s move to Windows Mobile, this was not an option for a replacement. So now I’m a happy owner of a Samsung Galaxy S III LTE, which makes a very slick impression so far. Yay!

BTW: I’m a computer scientist, and don’t tell me that 1023 days is a coincidence! This is exactly the number after which a 10 bit counter (not that anyone [i.e. anyone sane] would be using one of these) runs over. I really have to finish that post about coincidence detection in the brain I drafted some time ago…
